What They're Really Asking: This is asking about lived geography — not just a summer internship or a rotation, but actual residency. Howard wants to know whether you've shared the conditions of communities that lack adequate medical care.
The Pivot — Non-Trad Strategy: Non-trads who have lived in multiple places over their careers may have direct, honest material here. If you've lived in a rural community, a low-income urban neighborhood, a tribal nation, or an international underserved setting, describe it with specificity. What did access to care look like? What did you observe? If your residency history doesn't include underserved areas, be honest and let other prompts carry your community engagement story.

What They're Really Asking: This is where your career history becomes directly relevant. Howard wants to see sustained engagement — not a one-time volunteer shift, but real work in real communities over time.

If your career was in public health, social services, education, or any field with sustained community engagement, describe the specifics: the population, the service you provided, the barriers you observed, and what you learned about the structural causes of health disparities. Use this space plainly and directly. If your early GPA reflects financial stress, family responsibilities, or a period you've grown past, say so — and pair it with evidence of academic resilience since.
Common Mistakes Non-Trads Make: Leaving this blank when there is relevant context to share. Also: over-explaining or using this space to list additional accomplishments already in the primary application.
Prompt 6: COVID-19 Impact
The Prompt: "Please explain how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected your preparation for applying to medical school."
Limit: 250 words / 2,000 characters
What They're Really Asking: This is a context prompt specific to the pandemic disruption. If clinical hours, research, or coursework were interrupted, say so plainly.
The Pivot — Non-Trad Strategy: Non-trads who were working in healthcare or public health during the pandemic may have genuine material here — direct pandemic-era patient care, public health response work, or clinical disruptions that added to your preparation rather than delaying it. If the pandemic didn't significantly affect your preparation, a brief, honest acknowledgment is appropriate.
Common Mistakes Non-Trads Make: Manufacturing impact where there was none. If COVID didn't materially affect your preparation, say so in a sentence and move on.
Prompt 7: Why Howard
The Prompt: "Please express your motivation for attending Howard University College of Medicine."
